Please describe your demo: What does it do? How does it help to make shopping more personal and/or more effective? Everyday shopping has become boring for the whole family, because frequent customers build habits into their everyday shopping. Customers tend to buy the same products over and over, walk the fastest possible path to get those products, and we all get the privilege of standing in long lines.
We wanted to improve the boring shopping experience by creating Market Riddler, a game to entertain frequent shoppers. Our game introduces shoppers to new products and brands using location-based riddles and answers. Customers are encouraged to explore, alter shopping habits, and increase their cart size.
Our app sends a notification when they enter the store with a riddle to search for brands and products in the store. Typically the game is a series of three riddles with points awarded for each correct answer. We imagined that a reward system could be built where customers would compete against each other, redeem the points for prizes, or purchase the riddle items together for a discount.
We also imagine that our app can entertain children that are forced to accompany their parents while shopping. We can build colorful and fun riddles that are suitable for children to entertain them and include them in the shopping experience.
Which technologies did you use? How did you cope working with them?
We created an Android app, the correct locations are determined by estimote Beacons, and SPHERE.IO holds our riddles and products.
How did you get the idea, what was your inspiration?
Our team was excited to experiment with the estimote Beacons and making a game sounded fun.
Which steps did you take in order to complete the demo? What was your strategy?
The demo was a challenge from the start as none of us had built an Android app, nor worked with Beacons. We also realize that there is no SPHERE.IO Android SDK, so REST calls were necessary. It was also a goal to avoid using a middleware backend system, so all the data was stored in SPHERE.IO.
We started with a document in the first hour listing what we needed for a working app and used that as our product road map. Each person on the team used their strengths to make a great app and demo.
If there was more time, what would be the next steps? Are there any new features/use cases you could imagine?
Building the reward system would be critical to making this app popular with customers. Package the app and beacons in a non-technical way for shop-owners to utilize would also be the next hurdle.
Our game principle could also be extended to discovering museums, cities or any space that needs more fun and exploration. We also worked on pushing riddle notifications to the MOTO360, but ran out of time.

We had a great team with a good mix of developers, designers and specialists. Angar Brauner, Carsten Pohl and Stephan Wels are a humorous, hive minded group of developers from REWE Digital. Hector Blanco and Laura Luiz a loving team of artist and developer from SPHERE.IO and Tim Footdale an e-commerce specialist and the writer of todays answers.
